Program Update and Support Appeal

Antietam          We ask you to support ThorpeWood with an annual gift because your contribution has a direct and positive effect on the lives of the at-risk youth who participate in our programs. The students benefitting from your support come from throughout the mid-Maryland region and have achieved the following successes through ThorpeWood’s partnership programs:
•   Southwest Baltimore Charter School partnership increases the reading level and family literacy competence of second– through fourth–grade African–American boys. The Boys Read! program students learn reading skills an average of 50% faster than prior to enrollment and the program’s family literacy component increases their parents’ comfort with and total time reading with their boys.
•   Department of Juvenile Services partnership provides Frederick County’s adjudicated teenage girls with the skills necessary for them to address histories of abuse, neglect, trauma, poor choices, and chemical dependency. The girls in this program are 75% less often re-arrested, placed in out–of–home care, and in violation of the terms of their probation than their DJS–supervised peers who are not in our program.
•   Heather Ridge School partnership provides vocational training and intense mentoring to some of Frederick County’s least successful teenage boys. At ThorpeWood, the boys work alongside their school’s key administrators and, as a result, they learn more about each other and build a trust and an understanding which facilitate their relationships at school.
•   Antietam Academy Middle School partnership provides self–advocacy, decision–making, and conflict resolution skills to Washington County girls who are transitioning from an alternative school back to their home school. Fifty percent of the program’s girls have successfully returned to their home schools.
•   West Frederick Middle School partnership helps high ability level but low–achieving students to demonstrate their potential by working on large scale research projects with subject matter experts.
Thank you for your support of ThorpeWood’s programs and the students we serve. Your gift affects the lives of local youth in many positive ways and we are grateful for your involvement.
