ThorpeWood’s Boys Reading Club Receives $20,000 Grant

ThorpeWood is pleased to announce the receipt of a grant in the amount of $20,000 from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Associated Black Charities of Baltimore. The gift is in support of our Boys Reading Club family literacy program with Southwest Baltimore Charter School. This program, now in its second year, provides a long-term literacy intervention for 3rd and 4th grade boys and their caregivers. We are very grateful for this recognition and support, and are especially pleased to be able to expand the depth of the services we provide the boys. Greatest of thanks to Casey Foundation and Associated Black Charities of Baltimore!

ThorpeWood Launches Fourth and Fifth Partnerships

This fall ThorpeWood will be launching its fourth and fifth partnerships serving at-risk youth. Heather Ridge School, Frederick County’s public alternative school, has teamed with ThorpeWood to provide a unique growth opportunity for its lowest-achieving boys. Once a month, Heather Ridge’s ten to twelve least-successful and longest-tenured male students will travel to ThorpeWood for a day of hands-on projects working alongside adult male members of ThorpeWood’s staff and select volunteer craftsmen / foremen / mentors. The purpose of the days will not be the projects themselves, instead the interaction and teamwork that will make completion of the projects possible. These boys often need additional male role models as well as practice being part of successful and positive teams, and they will benefit from learning how to work and learn in a simulated job setting. Heather Ridge’s Principal, Aaron Phillips, will accompany the boys to ThorpeWood each month and will be one of the adult men working alongside them, forging an understanding and trust that he and the boys would never be able to achieve otherwise - a new dimension to their relationship that they can build on back at school.

Antietam Academy is Washington County’s public alternative school. Its newly-launched partnership with ThorpeWood focuses on middle school girls. Too many of Antietam’s middle school girls continue and escalate patterns of failure and unhealthy decision-making, ending up in Antietam’s high school worse off than they were when they first came to Antietam’s attention as middle schoolers. Our program will act as an early-intervention therapy, addressing issues of academic failure, social and personal pressures, family dysfunction, and unprocessed childhood traumas before they get expressed through behaviors such as drop-out, addiction, pregnancy, and runaway. This will be ThorpeWood’s most ambitious and intense program, with the girls receiving 40 days of therapy over two years, and that level of commitment reflects the emphasis Antietam Academy has placed on these girls and their still uncertain futures.

House Concert featuring: Singer/Songwriter: Gregory Alan Isakov - (Newest release: That Sea, The Gambler -- Americana, Folk) “Right from the first refrains of the first two tracks, it's evident that there is a reason why Gregory is recognized as "Best Male Singer-songwriter 2007" (Westword). When an artist can shush a room full of jaded peers and media types, as Gregory did at the Westword music showcase VIP nomination party recently, it's a major nod to the talent he possesses as a performer. He's appeared on David Dye's World Cafe and is quickly rising in the ranks of independent modern folk artists. For more details, please call 301.271.2823.
