April 4th, 2009 Seasons of Growth Spring Dinner a Great Success!

seasonsThorpeWood is pleased to announce that our annual Spring Fundraising Dinner was a success and raised nearly $4,000 for our program with the Frederick County Dept. of Juvenile Services. Canapˇs chef ML Carroll's dishes were a hit, and Brewer's Alley chef Joseph Canlas's pork barbecue made most guests go for seconds. We also enjoyed wonderful desserts prepared by Christine Wantz, pastry chef for Brewers Alley. Guests enjoyed music provided by Take Note, two local flautists.
In addition to great food, those in attendance had an opportunity to sponsor a participant in our Seasons of Growth program. Those who gave to the program were offered a two-part thank you gift: their choice of a variety of activities, including horseback riding, hiking with a rattlesnake expert, and fireside camping, to name a few; and a feedback session with a member of the ThorpeWood program staff, at which they can learn more about the girl they sponsored and her growth throughout the year.
We all look forward to next year’s Mountain Memories dinner in August. See you then!

ThorpeWood Receives Grant

AntietamThorpeWood is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Washington County, MD in support of its partnership program with Antietam Academy Middle School. Antietam Academy is Washington CountyÕs alternative school.
The program, created by ThorpeWood and Antietam Academy staff, is a custom-designed intensive intervention to help the middle schoolÕs most vulnerable 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls break a chain of poor life decisions by confronting the root causes of their lack of academic and development success. The goal of the program is to help the girls successfully transition out of Antietam Academy Middle School and back to their home schools with the skills to de-escalate and constructively resolve conflict, manage stress, and develop healthy relationships. The girls are involved with the program for at least two years.
The Community Foundation of Washington County (CFWC) has granted over $5 million to the nonprofit community since 1997. CFWC currently has 165 funds, with over $15 million in assets. For 2009, CFWCÕs unrestricted grants were directed to programs related to family security issues, including but not limited to domestic violence, child neglect and abuse, and teen pregnancy, with particular emphasis on addressing probable/possible root causes such as poor parenting skills, absent parents and single parent households.

ThorpeWood and West Frederick Middle School Celebrate First Semester of Partnership

West FrederickThorpeWood formed a new youth partnership with West Frederick Middle School (WFMS) in early 2009. The program's goal is to identify sixth-grade students who have a unique or untapped talent and allow them to use and extend that talent outside of school. The twelve students selected for this program are involved in a large project learning about and working with ThorpeWood's her of Icelandic horses, including:

  • Researching the history of Icelandic horses
  • Learning basic principles of horsemanship and training
  • Investigating how ThorpeWood uses the horses with other youth groups
  • Using artistic talents to capture the beauty of the horses
  • Designing and constructing gates, feeders, and stall structures
The students will present their work to their parents, WFMS faculty, the ThorpeWood board of directors, and members of the community on Monday, June 15 between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. at ThorpeWood's main lodge. For further details about the evening's presentation, please contact us by phone or email.
